Purple Dresses

Purple dresses have got to be the most underexposed dress colors around. Now I'm not talking about lavender dresses (that's a whole other post). I'm talking about that glorious, bright, bold, beautiful purple that says elegant and hawt at the same time!

Purple Dress! If you closed your eyes right now, what did those two words make you think about? Which shades of purple came to mind? Is it the gray tinted lavender that most mother of the grooms wear at a wedding? The bright spring lavender that looks so soft and feminine during the spring? Or do you picture the purple of royalty, that bright, deep shade of purple that melds the brilliance of blue with the hotness of red? Myself, I'm a bright dark royal purple gal.

Here is the problem: whatever shade of purple is your favorite, may not be too favorable. Meaning you can look at the color, but it's quite possible no one will like looking at the color on you =(. Every color has a range of tints in its repertoire, but not all of those tints can be worn by all people. It sucks, I know, but it's the truth. The good news is there is a shade of purple for everyone. Finding that shade isn't always so easy, but one method of doing it is to just hold up the colors next to your face. The right colors will make your face look alive and bright.

Purple is one of those colors that I think most of us forget when dress shopping. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the sea of reds, blues, pinks and blacks (especially the blacks). Don't get me wrong, I love those colors too, but isn't it just nice to stand out? I think what really gets to me is the sheer lack of purple I see on the red carpet during the Oscars. If you're looking for a gown for prom, a wedding, or bridesmaids, you'll never get the idea that purple is beautiful by watching Hollywood.

If you're looking for a few different types of purple dresses they're everywhere. Today's post is just to whet your appetite. I'll be throwing up some posts in the next couple of days on purple prom dresses, purple evening dresses, purple wedding dresses (yes, you can!), purple cocktail dresses and purple maxi dresses.

What are some cool things you need to know about purple? Well, of course everyone knows purple means royalty. That's something we're all taught early (royal purple), but purple means a lot of other things too! Purple is also closely associated with spirituality. In fact, in France it represents "Divinity" and is worn by the students and faculty in that field.

My favorite association with purple comes from the book The Color Purple. If you haven't read it, there is a line which is so beautiful "Womanist is to feminist as purple is to lavender". I've always taken that to mean that there is a piece of feminist in all women and it's just a small part of our color spectrum.

Remember that the Purple Cross, given to wounded soldiers, is also purple. As are orchids, lavender flowers and, lest we forget, the song Purple Rain. So when you think about purple you can think of women's rights, the soft scent of spring flowers, royalty, bravery (soldiers), and fun.

I'm here to tell you that purple is beautiful. Purple is magical and royal and it's, most importantly, different! Let the other girls wade out in a herd of red and black, while you make an entrance in a purple dress. It's easy to stand out when you're the only unique one! Not only will purple stand out, it will be remembrance. In fact, it might even be the most memorable color you can wear.
