Finding Perfect Cheap Party Dresses

Whats a girl to do when she has weddings, cocktail parties, dates and other occasions which need a party dress? We can't afford to buy expensive dresses for each affair. Well, of course, some of us can buy expensive dresses. But most of us scramble to find cheap party dresses. Does cheap mean tacky? No, not at all. There are many different places to find cheap dresses. Here are some of my ideas for those of us with smaller budgets:
- Everyone knows a woman who is or was a bridesmaid. Bridesmaid dresses used to be horrendous, but now there are funky wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses that can double as a cocktail dress when altered properly. Consider buying or asking for a their old dresses. Older dresses can be altered in many ways; shorten the full length gowns, consider making a spaghetti strap dress strapless.
- Craig's list has some wonderful used cocktail dresses, some of which are designer style. Last year I bought a vera wang dress for $40.
- Amazon.com has some incredible dresses (listed some below), which can be used for any formal or semi formal affairs. Some of the dresses are from seasons in the past, however, most are classic styles which can be worn for years.
- Ebay is a great place to find used dresses. Ebay doesn't only carry used clothing, despite popular opinion, most clothing on Ebay is wholesale.

Most web stores, like Amazon and Ebay, can offer low prices because they don't have a large rent for a shop. While they still have warehouse costs, they don't have any special sales districts for premium shop space. Online is a great place to shop for just that reason. Saving money on cheap party dresses has many advantages. Firstly, your pocketbook is happier (and if you're like me, your husband is a lot happier too). Saving money also means better accessories. Lastly, getting a real steal on a dress can really boost the feeling when wearing it, rather than adding needless guilt. If you choose a cheap party dress, or an expensive one, remember that you will look beautiful in anything if you feel beautiful.

Short Party Dresses - Short dresses can be worn to almost any prom, homecoming or cocktail dress. As long as the dress isn't white, it's a perfect dress for a formal wedding as well. 11 Women’s Bridesmaid Dresses for This Economy

Women's dresses are an inexpensive outfit for everyday wear, but a formal bridesmaid dress is usually a one time occasion dress. Today, more than ever, its important to find the lowest cost bridesmaid dresses available. The economy is rebounding, but its still doing so very slowly. Bridesmaids need all the help they can get with the cost of their dresses. Here are 11 ways to keep your bridesmaid dresses costs down, while making your wedding more fun and fresh!
- For any outdoor weddings during the fall, where a chill may be in the air, long dresses are the best option. But longer dresses don't mean more expensive. Last year's gowns are this year's deals. Check local boutiques for sales on out of season dresses, even summer stock dresses can be worn with a bolero jacket or shawl.
- Consider using a beach theme for your wedding. A beach wedding theme is a benefit for both bride and bridesmaids. The bride can choose a summer dress, even for a fall wedding, and the bridesmaids dresses are much cheaper. Even better have a flowered sundress style and the bridesmaids will be able to wear the dress over and over.
- Staying on the "themes" idea, if you're planning a vintage 1920s style wedding, your bridesmaids can pick up flapper dresses for as little as $25 at the costume shops. Think costumes will look cheap? Check below for some great pictures of dresses and you'll find out they can be very pretty.
- Check online for used bridesmaid dresses. Amazon.com has tons of them. Ebay is another site with inexpensive bridesmaid dresses and used dresses.
- Women's dresses are just as beautiful as those designed especially for "bridesmaid" dresses. Check the misses sections of your local department stores. Check their sales rack and you may find some surprises. Left over prom dresses can be found hiding in very unique spots.
- If you have smaller bridesmaids, size 10 and lower, you can find some great dresses in the junior section of department stores. Young girls have more choices for dresses which can be worn to a special occasion and then worn on an everyday basis.
- Skirts and tops can be interchanged with other outfits. Having an outfit which you can later dress up or down with other pieces is very economical.
- While beading and embroidery may seem like a good choice, keep in mind that dresses which are bought for only a formal occasion are usually only wearable at formal functions. Stick with plain colors and neutral tones, and your bridesmaids will be grateful for dresses which are a little dressy but not too formal to wear on date nights.
- Taffeta is a beautiful material, and not too expensive, but its also distinctively formal. Chiffon, while beautiful and formal, can be worn to semi-formal parties. Don't be afraid of cotton and polyester for the dresses.
- Plus size women's dresses are a little more expensive than regular sizes, that's usually no different for bridesmaid dresses. Have your plus sized bridesmaid in mind when you choose the dresses.
- Offer to foot the bill for the dresses in exchange for some of the wedding planning. Wedding planners can cost as much as $3,000, a few hundred dollars on bridesmaid dresses for a group of women that will have your best interest, and tastes, in mind when they find caterers, events centers, menus etc, for your wedding day.
Try and shop online at different places. Amazon is a great place to find dresses because different shops place their sale items there. Even Target and Macy's have dresses listed on Amazon's site. Here are some dresses which are all below $100.
Vintage Women’s Dresses

The major changes of women's dresses fashion began in the early 1900s, however, just as women were beginning to shed the Victorian and Edwardian fashion, the war broke out. During the two major wars, fashion stalled substantially due to material conservation. Soon after both wars, fashion evolution began to step up its pace. Think about the Victorian and Edwardian Era dresses which were stifling with corsets and bustles, heavy lace and tight bodices and then compare that to what seems like an immediate change to fashionable short dresses in 1920's and pants with sweaters. While there was not a drastic difference during those periods, (dresses were becoming shorter, to show ankle, and slimmer by the year) viewing from a historical perspective the difference is dramatic.
Vintage dresses , in my opinion, are those which fall between 1918-1960, during the big surge in historic changes with women's dresses. Dresses prior to 1918 I consider antique, and retro after 1960.
How the first World War changed women's dresses fashion forever
During wartime there is generally rationing and conservation with food, metals and especially clothing. During WWI this was very evident and was a huge instigator in the changing of styles of dresses and women's styles. With cloth being rationed to provide troops clothing, blankets etc, women were forced to conserve material used when making civilian clothes. As fashion had already begun to change dresses into thinner styles with drop waists and slightly shorter hems, there was a large jump to mid calf in 1915. The mid-calf dress was also a nod to women's liberation from the strict, uncomfortable styles of the Edwardian period.
With the end of the war, and fashion now becoming more acceptable as rationing ended, women were mixing socially and new fashions were becoming affordable to all classes. The hemlines, which had slowly begun to creep up to save material, now grew exponentially. By the mid 1920s dresses were just below the knee and fashion was not just for the rich and upper class societies. By 1926, Flappers were dancing the Charleston and hemlines were at a peak for the period.
Women's fashion continued to change and grow. In the 1930s the depression forced a different chapter in style and thus new materials were born to fit with conservative pocketbooks. Towards the middle of the 1930s, as the depression waned, women's fashion once again became feminine and glamorous. The swing skirt dress came into fashion with the use of newer materials. By day women were wearing lovely practical dresses and by night they were wearing glamorous gowns made of silk and trains down the back. The trend continued throughout the 1930s and into the 1940s.
When war came to the world, once again you see this surge in fashion changes. From the beginning of the 1940s to the mid 1940s women stayed with conservative suit dresses and short sleeves. Skirts were now at the knee and were almost all swing style or pleated. As the war ended, so did conservation of fabric, again, and dresses and fashion became stylish and more elaborate. This ushered in the era of the likes of Doris Day and Grace Kelly.
The glamorous 50's with fur, pin up styles etc. If you've ever watched Funny Face with Audry Hepburn or That Touch of Mink, with Doris Day and Cary Grant, you'll understand what is truly meant by glamor. Gloves, petticoats, silk lined fur coats that matched dresses, everything about this period screamed glamour. Dresses were big and bold with crinoline, lace and petticoats. Shoes were shiny patent and high heeled. Bodices were tight and feminine and modest, while sexy. Later in the decade came halter dresses with peter pan collars.
